Experience Gozo

Gozo is a small Island measuring 67 Sq. Kilometers. It is dry for most of the year with a sun that shines you brown and healthy, the hot times starts May and end around the end of October. Gozo is surrounded by beautiful blue water. In the cooler time of the year it is green with paths of discovery, an adventure to unfold with a fresh sea breeze. There are many summer & winter events, a long and vast history to unravel and discover, villages to wind through, along with an endearing culture to share in.

The Island

Gozo known locally as Għawdex, is an island of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. After the island of Malta itself, it is the second-largest island in the archipelago. Gozo has been inhabited since 5000 BC, when farmers from nearby Sicily crossed the sea to the island. Gozo was an important place for cultural evolution, and during the neolithic period the Ġgantija temples were built; they are among the world's oldest free-standing structures, as well as the world's oldest religious structures.

Meet the Gozitans, a mixture of cultures including Arab, Italian, Phoenician, British, and more. The people are sun happy with a tradition belonging to the earth and sea. They are of many Mediterranean traditions and are always friendly and helpful. Their are proud of their skills, the craft of bamboo curtain making, the fine thyme honey, the old way of lace-making, their skill of architecture, along with other old time skills handed down through generations. They love their Island and will gladly tell you where to go, what to see, and what to do.

Local Food

The food is a delicious mixtures of cultures. Traditional is Sheep's cheese Ricotta, which tastes wonderful with Gozitan thyme honey, it is also used for traditional Pastizzi of which there gives several kinds of filling but the two most popular are the cheese and the marrow pea ones. Also belonging to the Gozitan kitchen is rabbit cooked in several different ways, but always with tons of garlic, there is an assortment of pasta dishes similar and at the same time different from the Italian kitchen, and of course there is fish!

The capital’s Opera Houses/theatres, Teatru Astra and Teatru Aurora, are just two of Gozo’s performance spaces that are bustling with singers, musicians, and dancers every week of the year. Music, dance, and opera are crowd pleasers on Gozo, where enthusiasts come together to enjoy vibrant and professional performances from the islands’ top entertainers.

The Art Scene

With Gozo’s stunning views and rich history it’s no surprise that the visual arts continue to flourish here. New and upcoming Gozitan artists whose art may take the form of paintings, graphic design, sculpture, and photography have emerged and taken the Maltese art scene by storm. A number of exhibitions also take place throughout the year on Gozo to celebrate local arts and their artists.
